The collaboration between DKMS and Cure2Children Foundation

This partnership represents a powerful example of how international partnerships can expand access to life-saving cures for children with severe blood disorders in low- and middle-income countries. By combining DKMS’s global expertise in stem cell donor registration and transplantation support with Cure2Children’s long-standing commitment to capacity building and telemedicine, the partnership has helped hundreds of children access curative treatment for diseases such as thalassemia and sickle cell disease.

DKMS is one of the world’s leading organizations dedicated to the fight against blood cancer and blood disorders, has played a critical role in improving access to unrelated donor transplantation worldwide. Through its Access to Transplantation programs and support for emerging transplant centers, DKMS has increasingly focused on reducing global inequalities in access to curative therapies, see their publication on Blood Global Henatology.

The partnership between the two organizations has been especially impactful in India, where Cure2Children and its partners, including Sankalp India Foundation, have developed one of the largest non-profit transplant networks for thalassemia worldwide. In this setting, DKMS has provided support in donor search strategies, access to international donor registries, technical expertise, and educational collaboration. Together, the organizations have contributed to a dramatic increase in the number of children cured each year through stem cell transplantation.

One of the strengths of the collaboration is its emphasis on sustainability. Rather than creating isolated treatment opportunities, the partnership focuses on strengthening local transplant programs, training healthcare professionals, improving quality systems, and supporting data-driven clinical care. Telemedicine platforms and continuous mentoring allow experts from different parts of the world to collaborate in real time, helping local teams manage complex transplant cases while maintaining high standards of care.

The collaboration also highlights the importance of equity in global health. While curative therapies such as gene therapy and advanced cellular treatments remain inaccessible to most patients in low-resource settings because of their extremely high costs, allogeneic stem cell transplantation can already provide a realistic and affordable cure for many children when implemented efficiently. The DKMS–Cure2Children model demonstrates that high-quality transplantation can be delivered at a fraction of the costs seen in high-income countries, without compromising clinical outcomes.

Beyond the direct clinical impact, the partnership has contributed to the broader international conversation on access to cure. By supporting scientific collaborations, educational initiatives, and quality-improvement programs, DKMS and Cure2Children are helping redefine what is possible for children born with severe blood disorders in unequal healthcare settings.

Their collaboration stands as a model for how international organizations can work together not only to save lives today, but also to build sustainable systems capable of delivering curative care for future generations.
