Last Wednesday, 7 July 2021, Stephanie, a 5-year-old girl with severe sickle cell disease from Nigeria, received the bone marrow from her twin sister Sofia. This is the first allogeneic transplant done in Armenia.
Cure2Children made an agreement with the Hematology Center after Prof. Yeloyan (HCY) in Yerevan, which has a state-of-the-art transplant center: We would assist with the start-up of allogeneic transplant if HCY committed to do 10 children with sickle cell disease from Africa for free. HCY, directed by Professor Samvel Danyelan, has very professional and dedicated medical and nursing staf with substantial experience in managing children and adults with malignancies. In fact, so far everything is going as planned. Our Medical Director, Dr. Lawrence Faulkner, reached Yerevan on June 26 and will be there until July 28, i.e. when both Stephanie and Christiane Manuella, a 1.6-year-old from Cameroon, due for BMT Tuesday 13 July 2021, will presumably have engrafted.
