Thalassemia treatment
A collaborative network to cure thalassemia: to support the development of a thalassemia transplant network in Pakistan by providing financial and professional support to 5 selected institutions starting no later than mid-2008. The endpoint is to obtain at least an 80% thalassemia-free survival rate in the total group of 30 patients.
Thalassemia prevention
A Thalassemia major prevention program in Pakistan: this project will proceed in parallel with the transplantation program and will aim at the screening of the first-degree relatives of thalassemia patients enrolled in the transplantation program.
Undergoing bone marrow transplant could be a terrifying experience for a family to endure. The life and death struggle affects not only the patient, but the entire family. The necessity to embrace those families is vital to their social, emotional, and financial survival.
