Objective

An electronic engineer with a strong interest in medical informatics and web database development.

Profile

In 1997 I spent my civil service period in the Italian Neuroblastoma Association, a fund raising charity, inside the Gaslini paediatric hospital. I developed a very strong interest in cancer research and medical informatics. I've been involved soon in the clinical care process inside the paediatric oncology department and I started coding some small Access database applications to help with daily clinical tasks and office work. I developed the ability to find problems often overlooked or hidden, seeing an opportunity for improvement and looking for innovative, simple and (possibly) effective solutions. In 1998 they asked me to enter the Neuroblastoma Biostatistics Unit (Advanced Biotechnology Centre, Genova) as a junior biostatistician and database programmer. I acquired basic biostatistics skills, a practical knowledge of data management and analysis that greatly improved my data modeling expertise. I quit in 2000 to dedicate completely to web database programming, seeing in the internet a fantastic opportunity to develop powerful application for collaborative data and knowledge management. Despite medical informatics was not a "mature" market in Italy I decided to go and try to work as a freelancer database developer, because I felt that every improvement in the care process could eventually improve patients health. I live in London since 2006, where I collaborate with the Cure2Children Foundation, developing the internet collaboration and communication infrastracture using open source tools.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

CDATA open source project (2008 - now)

London, UK

I'm currently working on the CDATA project, an open source clinical database platform (PHP, MySql).

CDATA project home

Consultant for Cure2Children foundation (2007 - now)

Florence, Italy

Cure2Children is an Italian foundation supporting health professional in the developing country. They asked me to develop their websites (www.cure2children.org) and the communication and collaboration infrastructure, including web email and file repository, donors database, discussion forum, project management application, clinical databases.

Director of Metwork limited (09/2004 - 09/2005)

Milano, Italy

A small startup company (www.metwork.it) dedicated to the development of clinical web database applications. I gained some experience in installing and running a web server from remote (SSH), securing the system, setting up a LAMP environment on a Suse Linux based machine.

Web Database Developer (04/2003 - 04/2004)

Bioengineering and Medical Informatics Consortium, Pavia, Italy.

I worked in a team as a web developer and clinical database requirements analyst, mainly in a Java-based environment. I used programming tools as Java, Javascript, Cocoon, XML, Access, Oracle and Xtreme programming techniques.

  • Web database for the Parkinson clinical network: shared clinical folders with a complex and rich data structure
  • Web database for the Headache clinical network: worked on requirements, data modeling and web application development, to produce a simple but flexible clinical information system
  • Database interface generator: concept and coding of an Access application to generate from metadata the complete Java code for the web interface, that saved weeks of work on new projects
  • Azalea: a medical information portal about non-profit associations and health related resources
  • Web database SIPP: a web database to collect, integrate and analyse the milk analysis dataset from the regional zooprophilactic institute
  • Reengineering of the BPA database: data model revision and web administration interface developing for the central database of italian hospitals expense benchmarking

Alzheimer Web Database Project (09/2003 - 01/2004)

University of Varese, Italy.

Worked as a freelancer on the application requirements, data modeling and development of the regional Alzheimer network, using ASP and Sql Server.

Web developer (freelance) (01/2001 - 05/2003)

Italian Neuroblastoma Association, Genova, Italy

Bacciotti Foundation, Florence, Italy

Worked as a web database developer in Florence and Genova for non-profit charities, always in the paediatric cancer research field (neuroblastoma and ganglioneuroma) .

  • NBNET: Neuroblastoma Network Portal, community building and content management application, developed from scratch in PHP/MySql
  • MRM: web database for the study of minimal residual disease in neuroblastoma and referrals centralisation, in PHP/MySql
  • Website of the Bacciotti Foundation: content management application developed in ASP/Access
  • Automatic online calculator of chemotherapy plan, according to therapy protocols, in PHP

Junior biostatistician and database programmer (09/1998 - 09/2000)

Advanced Biotechnology Centre, Genova, Italy.

Worked in the Neuroblastoma Biostatistics Unit, on database development, management and analysis, using Microsoft Access (VBA), DB3 and SAS on various projects:

  • Reengineering and management of the Italian Neuroblastoma Registry (from DB3 to Access)
  • Database for the NB97 protocol
  • Database for the automatic calculation of neuroblastoma chemotherapy (thesis)
  • Database for the symptomatic spinal cord compression data
  • Database for the neuroblastoma genetic analysis laboratory
  • Several statistical analyses of the neuroblastoma dataset
  • Office automation applications
